On Monday, August 11, the Memorial in honor of Professor Clementino Fraga Filho was inaugurated at the Library of the University Hospital (HU) of UFRJ, which bears his name. The space was created to preserve the memory and highlight the legacy of one of the most important figures in the history of the university and public health in Brazil.
The ceremony featured a presentation by library fellow Jennyfer Vitória Nascimento, who outlined the stages of the project that led to the creation of the Memorial. This was followed by a testimonial panel with the participation of Luiz Antônio Alves de Lima, Head of the Education Management Unit of the Ebserh Hospital Complex, Marcos Alpoim Freire, Executive Superintendent of the Ebserh Hospital Complex, Amâncio Paulino de Carvalho, General Superintendent of the Ebserh Hospital Complex, and Eduardo Gordilho Fraga, former coordinator of the Educational Activities Coordination (CAE) and son of Clementino Fraga Filho, who shared a moving account of his father’s life journey.
A prominent figure in the academic and institutional landscape, Clementino Fraga Filho became a Full Professor in 1954, the same year he also assumed the directorship of the UFRJ Institute of Nutrition. In 1966, he served as the university’s rector for 13 months, and between 1978 and 1986 he headed the University Hospital. Recognized for his dedication to academic training and strengthening the hospital complex, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus in 1986.
The inauguration of the Memorial represents a symbolic milestone for both the academic and hospital communities, reaffirming the relevance of Clementino Fraga Filho’s career and ensuring that his contribution continues to inspire new generations of health and education professionals.

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) has risen 70 positions in the global ranking by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), reaching 331st place among 21,462 institutions evaluated across 94 countries. UFRJ is now the second-best university in Brazil, behind only USP (ranked 118th worldwide), which leads in Latin America. Notably, UFRJ ranked highest in Brazil for the "quality of education" criterion, placing 504th globally in that category.
Despite these advances, Rector Roberto Medronho emphasized that the university still faces budgetary constraints, which affect its performance. He highlighted the dedication of the academic community in the face of limited resources and criticized the funding disparity compared to state institutions, such as those in São Paulo. In the overall ranking, Harvard leads, followed by MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, and Oxford.
