Graduated in Medicine (1975) and PhD in Molecular Biology (1975), both from the Escola Paulista de Medicina (UNIFESP). He began his independent scientific career at the Medical Investigation Laboratories (LIM) of the Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP (1976-81). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine (USA) from 1979 to 1980, with a grant from the "US NIH/Fogarty International Research Fellow." Since 1981, he has been a faculty member of Medical Biochemistry at UFRJ, becoming a Full Professor in 1992. He coordinates the "Connective Tissue Laboratory," located at the University Hospital of UFRJ, as part of a project integrating basic and clinical areas of the institution. His research focus is glycobiology, particularly studying the structure, biological activity, and metabolism of sulfated polysaccharides. His work has been funded by regular grants from CNPq, FAPERJ, and international agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Mizutani Foundation for Glycoscience, British Council, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (Canada), and COFECUB (France). He has been a Fellow of the "John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation," is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, and is a member of the National Order of Scientific Merit (Commander class). From 2003 to 2004, he served as president of the Brazilian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
