Awarded the Medal of Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit (2023). She holds a degree in Medicine from UFRJ (1987), a Master’s in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from UFRJ (1992), and a PhD in Sciences from UFRJ (1995). She is the head of the Pulmonary Investigation Laboratory at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics, UFRJ. Vice-Coordinator of the INCT for Regenerative Medicine and the Rio Network for Innovation in Nanotechnology for Health - NanoSAÚDE (FAPERJ). Elected General Secretary of the International Society of Cell and Gene Therapy (June 2022-2025). Coordinator of the COVID-19-FAPERJ Network. She was the coordinator of undergraduate and graduate programs at IBCCF/UFRJ and Head of the Cell Therapy and Bioengineering Program. She served on the CAPES Superior Council from 2021 to 2024. Visiting Professor at various universities in Brazil and abroad (University of Toronto, University of Genoa, University of Dresden, University of Uppsala, University of Brussels). She has published over 460 indexed articles, resulting in more than 18,350 citations (H-index: 72); 125 book chapters in Brazil and abroad, 1 book on respiratory physiology, and has delivered over 500 lectures at national and international conferences. She has supervised 45 Master’s students, 51 PhD students, and 30 postdocs, many of whom are currently faculty/researchers in Brazil and abroad. She is an ad hoc consultant for several national and international funding agencies. She participated in the TARKINAID project of the European Union. Former President of the Brazilian Society of Physiology (2021-2022). She coordinated the Young Medical Leaders Program of the ANM (2019-2024) and was President of AMIB-Net (a cooperation network in clinical research among intensivists in Brazil - 2021-2023). She was Vice-President of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy South Central America (2019-2021). Associate Editor of Intensive Care Medicine (Impact Factor: 28.991) (2010-2013). She participates in the editorial board of various international high-impact journals (e.g., American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (Impact Factor: 24.7) and Critical Care (Impact Factor: 15.1)). She is a reviewer for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, American Journal of Cell and Molecular Biology, Anesthesia and Analgesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Journal of Applied Physiology, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, among others. She has experience in the field of Physiology, with an emphasis on Respiratory Physiology and Pathophysiology. Her research focuses on understanding the pathogenesis and developing new therapeutic strategies for respiratory diseases (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pulmonary Fibrosis), acute lung injury induced or associated with mechanical ventilation, COVID-19, and sepsis.
