Graduated in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1996, Master’s in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from UFRJ in 1998, and Doctorate in Biological Chemistry from UFRJ in 2001. He completed postdoctoral studies in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Boston University School of Medicine (USA) in 2015 and in Parasitic Biochemistry at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of São Paulo in 2022. In 2018, he obtained the title of Livre-docente in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Institute of Chemistry at the University of São Paulo. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Leopoldo de Meis Institute of Medical Biochemistry at UFRJ and heads the Stress Response Biochemistry Laboratory. The research projects conducted in his laboratory focus on the role of mitochondria in the response pathways to different types of cellular stresses, including those generated by nutritional imbalances, activation of the immune response, or aging. He has been a critical voice against the commercial exploitation of open access scientific publications promoted by large publishing groups and in 2021 was one of the proponents of the Initiative for Responsible Scientific Assessment (IRSA). In 2022, he became an associate editor of the journal "Bioenergetics Communications," a new open-access journal following the diamond model, with an innovative editorial proposal that is economically fairer and more inclusive.
