He holds a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1985), a master's degree in Psychoanalytic Theory from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1993), and a doctorate in Public Health from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (1997). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology (2001). He is a Full Professor of Pediatric Hematology at the UFRJ School of Medicine, assigned to the Department of Pediatrics. He served as Director of the Martagão Gesteira Institute of Child Care and Pediatrics (IPPMG) at UFRJ from 2006 to 2010. He was a member of the National Health Council, representing ABRAHUE during the three-year period from 2006 to 2009. He was Coordinator of the UFRJ Hospital Complex from 2011 to 2012. He is currently the head of the Pediatric Hematology Sector at IPPMG and is also the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Maternal and Child Health at IPPMG. He has experience in the field of Medicine, with an emphasis on Pediatric Hematology, working primarily on the following topics: hematology, pediatric hematology, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, lymphomas, anemia, health economics, cancer epidemiology, and ethics.
