Graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1973, obtained a master's degree in Pneumology and Tisiology from UFRJ (1982), and a PhD in Pulmonary Immunopathology from the National Heart and Lung Institute / Imperial College London (1991). He completed two postdoctoral fellowships at the Institut Pasteur in Paris (1991-1992 and 1999), in addition to 14 senior internships between 1993 and 2002 at the Institut Pasteur and Cornell University. Scientist of Our State at FAPERJ (2000-2025). He was Coordinator of the Clinical Medicine Graduate Program at UFRJ from 2005 to 2018 (Deputy Coordinator from 2000 to 2005 and 2018 to 2022), with a CAPES score of 7 (Quadrennial Evaluation 2022), where he has supervised or is supervising more than 100 master's and doctoral students, as well as five postdoctoral students. He served as Deputy Director of Graduate Studies at FM/UFRJ (2018-2022). He is a 1A researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq, 1994-2026), Adjunct Professor of Immunology in Medicine (Honorary Full Professor, 2002-2023), Adjunct Professor, Emeritus (2023-), Weill Medical College, Cornell University, New York, Principal Investigator of projects funded by national and international agencies, including the National Institutes of Health/NIH in the United States and a member of NIH review committees. He has secured or participated in securing more than 60 projects funded by national and international agencies from 1996 to 2028. A professor at UFRJ from 1977 to December 2022, a Full Professor (retired) of Pneumology at the Faculty of Medicine of UFRJ (from 1997 to 2022), Emeritus Professor of UFRJ (2023 -), and he was Director of the Research Division of the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital/UFRJ (2007-2010) and Executive Director of the Institute of Thoracic Diseases/UFRJ (2001-2005). He was head of the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory/HUCFF/UFRJ from 1993 to 2022. Currently, he is a Visiting Higher Education Professor at UFF 2023-2025 (PPG Medical Sciences). He was Coordinator of the Medicine I Area of CAPES (2008-2011, Deputy Coordinator 2006-2008). He was a member of the Advisory Committee in Medicine (CA-MD) of CNPq (1999-2003 and 2014-2020). He is Coordinator of Health at FAPERJ (2018-2023). He has extensive experience in academic evaluation. From 2000 to 2021, he participated in 25 project review committees (study sections) at the invitation of the NIH/USA and in more than 400 defense and judging committees. He works in the field of Medicine, with an emphasis on Pneumology, mainly on the following topics: pulmonary immunology, pathogenesis of asthma and COPD, allergic and non-allergic bronchopulmonary inflammation, and tuberculosis.
