Holds a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1985), a master's degree in Internal Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1992), and a Ph.D. in Medicine (Infectious and Parasitic Diseases) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2000). Visiting Research Professor at CAPES-Fulbright at the Liver Center of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard University, Boston, from December 2008 to March 2009. Currently, he is a Full Professor of Internal Medicine/Hepatology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He has experience in the field of Medicine, with an emphasis on Gastroenterology, specifically in Hepatology, covering the following topics: Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), with interest in prognostic markers for liver, cardiovascular, and extrahepatic neoplasms outcomes; non-invasive fibrosis markers; genetic polymorphisms and prognosis of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD); and care pathways for MASLD. Viral Hepatitis: Hard outcomes related to Hepatitis C post-treatment with direct-acting antivirals; care pathways for viral hepatitis. He is a Scientist of Our State from FAPERJ, a Research Productivity Fellow from CNPq, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (FAASLD).
