avatarHolds a degree in Medicine (1979) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), specialization (Residency) in Pediatrics (1982) from IPPMG-UFRJ, a Master’s in Pediatrics (1989) from UFRJ, specialization (Fellowship) in Clinical Epidemiology (1992) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) (1992) from UNC-CH, a Ph.D. in Epidemiology (1996) from UNC-CH, and specialization in Hospital Management (2005) and Postdoctoral studies (2018) from the National School of Public Health - Fiocruz. He is a member of the international network INCLEN (International Clinical Epidemiology Network). He served as President of LATINCLEN, the regional network for Latin America of INCLEN, of which he is still a member. He is currently also a member of the Cochrane network. He has served on several occasions as an advisor/consultant for the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization. He actively contributed to the implementation of the IMCI strategy in Latin America and worldwide. At UFRJ, he was the Coordinator of the IPPMG Medical Residency, Head of the IPPMG Research Division, Head of the Department of Pediatrics at FM-UFRJ, Director of IPPMG (2002-2006), Director of the Faculty of Medicine (2006-2011), Vice-Rector (2011-2015), Coordinator of the Academic Master’s in Maternal and Child Health at IPPMG (2016-2018). He participated in the Executive Leadership Program in "Early Childhood Development" at Harvard University (2016). He is currently a Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics (UFRJ). He coordinates the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of Epidemiology and Health - LAMPES at UFRJ and the Coordination of Special Projects at the Decania of the Center for Health Sciences at UFRJ. Since 2019, he has held the Carlos Chagas Chair at the College of Advanced Studies (CBAE) at UFRJ. He participates in several graduate programs in the country, including the UFRJ Clinical Medicine Program (Concept 7) and the IESC Public Health Program (Concept 5). He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Science for Childhood Network (NCPI) and an Associate Researcher at the Brazilian Center for Applied Research in Early Childhood (CEPAPI). He conducts research using epidemiological methods and clinical epidemiology in various areas of health. He has experience in the field of Medicine, with an emphasis on Maternal and Child Health, conducting research mainly in this area. In 2020, he was named among the world’s "most influential" 160,000 scientists in two rankings published in the scientific journal PLOS Biology (2020): career impact (Table-S6-career-2019) and impact in 2019 (Table-S7-singleyr-2019). In the first ranking, he was listed alongside approximately 600 other Brazilians.
